Harry Potter Is Coming to Life in Augmented Reality

The company that’s responsible for the briefly mega-popular game Pokemon Go! has announced their next game will utilize the Harry Potter universe. Details of what players can expect and when they can expect to play are scant.

Accio! those cell phones and prepare to re-enter the world of nostalgia-fueled augmented reality (AR). Niantic, the developers of last year’s flash-in-the-pan of popularity, AR game Pokemon Go! has announced their next adventure which will take place in the beloved Harry Potter universe. The game will be titled Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

A statement from Niantic says, “Players will learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”

An image featuring the game’s logo has been released, although footage of gameplay is still forthcoming. As a small teaser, the statement promises that “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will leverage the full stack of the Niantic Platform while also providing an opportunity to pioneer all new technology and gameplay mechanics.”

The company also does not specify when aspiring Gryffindors, Slytherins, Ravenclaws, or Hufflepuffs will have their chance at bypassing their seven years at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

At the height of Pokemon Go! popularity, the game saw around 45 million players each day and made more than $1.2 billion in sales, according to the BBC.
